WREXHAM – Former England international defender Conor Coady has officially departed Wrexham AFC after both parties agreed to mutually terminate his contract on September 1, 2026, the club announced. The 33-year-old center-back leaves the Stok Cae Ras just over a year after arriving from Leicester City in August 2025, freeing up a squad spot as the club continues its push in the EFL Championship.
According to a short statement released by Wrexham AFC, the club confirmed the mutual agreement and thanked Coady for his efforts, wishing him well for the future. Coady had initially signed a two-year contract with Wrexham, which included an option for an additional year. However, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in manager Phil Parkinson’s defensive lineup.

Although Coady started the first five Championship fixtures of the 2025/26 season, he quickly lost his place in the starting XI. His appearances were subsequently limited, with his only other match for the Red Dragons coming in a League Cup tie against Cardiff City in October. In search of regular playing time, the experienced defender secured a loan move to Championship rivals Charlton Athletic in January 2026. He made 12 appearances and scored once for the Addicks, helping them secure survival in the division.
Coady returned to Wrexham ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, but he remained outside of Parkinson’s plans, failing to make the matchday squad for the first four games of the new season. His departure coincides with Wrexham’s acquisition of Burnley center-back Joe Worrall, which further solidified the team’s defensive options.
A Liverpool academy graduate, Coady boasts an illustrious career, having made over 300 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers, whom he captained in both the Premier League and European competitions. He also had spells with Everton and Leicester City, and was selected for England’s squads at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
As a free agent, Coady is not bound by the transfer deadline and can sign with a new club at any time. If a suitable playing opportunity does not materialize, a transition to full-time media work remains a viable option, as he has already undertaken several punditry roles during the current season.
