A New Era for Detroit Baseball
After more than a quarter-century, the home of the Detroit Tigers is set for a significant identity shift. On September 21, 2026, the organization confirmed that the venue currently known as Comerica Park will be renamed Fifth Third Park starting with the 2026-2027 Major League Baseball season, according to The Detroit News. The change follows the multi-billion-dollar acquisition of Comerica Incorporated by Fifth Third Bancorp earlier this spring.
The transition marks the first time the stadium has changed names since its opening in 2000. While the physical structure remains a cornerstone of downtown Detroit’s revitalization, the branding will reflect the consolidation of the two banking entities. Officials from Ilitch Sports & Entertainment and Fifth Third Bank announced the move just before the Tigers’ final home stand of the 2026 season against the Washington Nationals, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
Financial and Community Stakes
Naming rights deals serve as a vital revenue stream for Major League Baseball franchises. While financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, Fifth Third officials confirmed that the existing naming-rights contract—originally signed for 30 years and extended through 2034—remains in effect under the new ownership. Steve Davis, region president for Fifth Third Bank in Michigan, emphasized that the bank views the stadium as a long-term community anchor, pledging to honor the venue’s history while integrating their brand.
Beyond the signage, Fifth Third has committed a $20 million investment toward the city’s Neighborhood Program, targeting growth in the Gratiot/Seven Mile and Denby/Whittier districts. The bank, which now holds the largest share of retail deposits in Michigan, intends to roll out fan engagement initiatives, including interactive experiences during the upcoming off-season and potential fan-voted designs for future team-branded debit cards.
Fan Sentiment and Legacy
The transition has been met with mixed reactions from the fanbase. During the solicitation process, many supporters advocated for incorporating the name “Tiger Stadium” into the new branding to preserve the historical lineage of Detroit baseball. Despite these requests, the organization opted for the corporate branding associated with the new ownership. The venue has seen several iterations of names throughout its history, from Bennett Park to the storied Tiger Stadium, and the move to Fifth Third Park represents the latest chapter in this evolution.
Installation of the new signage, including the prominent displays at main entrances and the left-field scoreboard, is slated to begin in early 2027. The stadium is expected to debut its new name for the 2027 home opener, currently scheduled for March 25, pending labor negotiations between the league and the players’ union.
