A Shift at the Top
Singapore Airlines has been named the world’s best airline at the 2026 World Airline Awards, held on 18 September at London’s Langham Hotel, according to Skytrax. This victory marks the airline’s sixth time securing the top honor, reflecting a successful effort to surpass last year’s leader, Qatar Airways, which slipped to second place in the 2026 rankings.
The rankings, which evaluated more than 300 carriers, are based on an extensive international passenger survey conducted between September 2025 and August 2026. The Economic Times notes that the survey captures passenger sentiment across various metrics, including cabin service, seat comfort, cleanliness, onboard catering, and value for money, rather than relying solely on fleet size or financial performance.
Regional Performance and Notable Shifts
While Singapore Airlines claimed the top spot, the competitive landscape saw significant movement among other major carriers. Cathay Pacific maintained its third-place position, while Japan’s ANA All Nippon Airways rose to fourth, and Turkish Airlines climbed to fifth. Emirates, previously fourth, fell to sixth place. The top ten list was rounded out by Air France, Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines, and Korean Air.
In the Indian market, Air India demonstrated a notable recovery, rising to 57th place globally from 84th in 2025. Conversely, IndiGo saw a decline, dropping to 61st from 39th the previous year. Despite the shift, IndiGo remains the second-highest-ranked Indian carrier, trailing only Air India within the India and South Asia regional category.
Segment-Specific Dominance
The awards also highlighted excellence in specific operational niches. Qatar Airways continued its dominance in the business class segment, securing that category award for the thirteenth time. Turkish Airlines was recognized as the best airline in Europe for the eleventh time, while AirAsia took the top award for low-cost carriers. Scoot continued its streak as the world’s best long-haul low-cost airline for the sixth consecutive year.
The airline alliance category saw a change in leadership, with oneworld reclaiming the top spot for the first time since 2021. Star Alliance was recognized for its lounge facilities, specifically the one located at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport’s Terminal 1.
