Authorities in Essex, Vermont, are searching for the owner of a dog involved in a fatal attack at the Woodside Natural Area Trail last Tuesday. Brad Lutz, the owner of the deceased pet, is publicly seeking answers after his chihuahua-dachshund mix, Jack, was killed by a larger, unleashed animal.
According to Lutz, the attack occurred suddenly, and the owner of the attacking dog left the scene before police could be contacted. Lutz describes the owner as a middle-aged white woman, approximately 40 to 50 years old with sandy hair, who was accompanied by a young boy, estimated to be between 8 and 10 years old. The attacking dog is described as a medium-to-large, solid tan animal resembling a pit bull.
Emily Lewis, a certified dog behavior consultant, emphasized the importance of leash laws, noting an increase in reports of pets exhibiting concerning behaviors. She advised pet owners to remain vigilant and utilize safety deterrents, such as umbrellas or specialized sprays, when walking in public areas.
