Japanese authorities have issued a formal reprimand to a 48-year-old father who abandoned his 7-year-old son on Mount Fuji to continue a hike toward the summit. The incident, which occurred on the Fujinomiya Trail, has drawn significant public attention to the risks of child endangerment in high-altitude environments.
According to reports cited by FNN and Japan Today, the boy was discovered at approximately 7:40 a.m. local time on August 20, 2026, by a worker at a mountain hut. The child was sitting alone on a bench at the sixth station, situated at an altitude of over 2,000 meters (approximately 6,500 to 8,200 feet). The boy had been left with only a soft drink and a snack.
Eight Hours of Isolation
Initial investigations suggest the child was left behind around 4:30 a.m. after complaining of fatigue. His father and older brother proceeded toward the summit, leaving the boy unattended for roughly eight hours. During this period, weather conditions at the sixth station deteriorated, with fog and rain reported in the area. When located, the boy was described as tired and fussy but otherwise unharmed.
Local police were contacted by the mountain hut employee, leading to a search operation. Officers successfully tracked the father to a location between the seventh and eighth stations of the trail—a distance estimated to be a three-hour hike from where the child was abandoned. Upon being reunited with his son, the father was confronted by police and reportedly expressed regret for his “rash decision.”
