Federal authorities have arrested Jessica Bowie, an Albany-based resident, on charges of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. According to a Department of Justice press release, Bowie was taken into custody on Wednesday following a coordinated undercover investigation by the FBI.

Court records indicate that the operation involved three undercover FBI operatives who engaged with Bowie over an extended period. The complaint alleges that these operatives provided her with a disabled explosive device and instructed her on its use, as well as providing training on handling firearms. The arrest occurred immediately after Bowie took possession of what she believed to be a functional explosive device intended for an attack on the New York State Capitol.

The Justice Department stated that the investigation was focused on preventing an attack linked to the Islamic State group. Bowie made her initial appearance in federal court on Thursday. She is currently being held without bail as the legal proceedings continue. If convicted on the charge of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, she faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

As of late Friday, representatives for Bowie’s defense team had not provided a public comment regarding the allegations.
