Administrative Breach in Monte Carlo
The FIA stewards have issued disciplinary action against McLaren and Ferrari following the late arrival of drivers Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc to the official Thursday press conference at the Monaco Grand Prix. Each team has been handed a €5,000 fine, which has been suspended for a period of 12 months, provided no further breaches of this nature occur.
The incident centered on Article B10.1.1a of the FIA F1 regulations, which mandates strict punctuality for media duties and official ceremonies. Both drivers appeared before the stewards on Friday morning to provide explanations, citing clashing commitments as the primary reason for their delay. However, the stewards maintained that prior engagements do not constitute a valid mitigation for missing scheduled media obligations.
Regulatory Enforcement
Under Article 9.15.1 of the FIA’s International Sporting Code, the team is held responsible for their drivers’ adherence to official schedules. While the penalty is considered a ‘low-tariff’ offense compared to other sporting breaches, such as arriving late to the pre-grid national anthem, the FIA continues to emphasize the importance of media punctuality for televised broadcasts.
The governing body noted that while logistical challenges are a reality of the Monaco circuit, the established schedule is designed to accommodate all teams. In contrast to previous instances—such as Max Verstappen’s 2024 exemption due to traffic, which was communicated to the FIA in advance—the lack of prior notification in this case necessitated the formal sanction.
