Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described the incident as the most severe bus tragedy in decades. The bus was transporting high school students to Winter Haven High School when an oncoming car crossed the center line and struck the side of the vehicle near the rear wheels. The initial impact tore off the bus’s tire, causing it to crash head-on into an oncoming Jeep that subsequently caught fire, resulting in the death of its driver.
Hospitalizations and Emergency Response
Emergency responders flooded the crash scene in Winter Haven, spending the initial hours triaging victims, transporting the injured, and working to reunite students with their families. Out of the 39 occupants on board—comprising high school students, the bus driver, and the driver’s daughter—26 individuals were rushed to local hospitals. At least one person remained in critical condition following the morning commute collision.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the car that initially crossed the center line was heading to work at the time of the crash. According to the sheriff’s office, that motorist remained at the scene, cooperated fully with investigators, and was neither arrested nor immediately charged with a crime.
School District and Community Response
Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Frederick Heid noted that students regularly practice safety drills for bus evacuations, which aided in handling the chaotic aftermath. Pointing to the heavily damaged vehicle resting upside-down on the roadside, Heid remarked that the outcome could have been significantly worse given the destructive forces involved. He also noted that a separate Polk County school bus incident occurred last month, though no students were on board during that prior mishap.
Polk County school board chairman Justin Sharpless urged the local community to unite in grief and support for the affected families, school staff, and students impacted by the tragedy. Officials have emphasized that grief counselors and support services are being mobilized across the district to assist students and teachers processing the loss of the young student.
