A New Multiplayer Direction
In a recent discussion regarding the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that the title serves as an outlet for competitive multiplayer concepts that did not fit within the studio’s traditional single-player frameworks. Miyazaki, who described himself as not particularly skilled at high-intensity PvP games, emphasized that the project is driven by his personal desire to see these specific systems realized.
The game draws heavily from board game design, specifically incorporating a ‘Virtue’ system—a victory-point mechanic that offers an alternative to direct combat—and a ‘Sigil’ system that allows for character-building depth similar to tabletop RPGs. According to Miyazaki, these elements are intended to create a more strategic layer, balancing the intense action sequences with systems that reward various playstyles.
Accessibility and PvP Dynamics
Addressing concerns regarding the high barrier to entry typical of FromSoftware titles, Miyazaki confirmed that the game will feature a multi-step tutorial to guide new players. For those uncomfortable with competitive combat, he noted that character customization allows for a ‘Kin’ support build, where computer-controlled companions can be augmented to handle combat duties, enabling players to take a more passive role if they reach the final stages of a match.
The developer also addressed the needs of hardcore PvP enthusiasts, confirming that the game will include an ‘Invasion’ system. This mode will allow players to join ongoing matches as a ninth participant, specifically to engage in combat without the pressure of managing Virtue points or other objective-based mechanics.
Partnership and Future Support
Miyazaki highlighted the role of Nintendo in the development process, noting that the partnership has been instrumental in balancing the game’s complex mechanics and refining the onboarding experience. While the studio is currently focused on the launch, Miyazaki confirmed plans for long-term support, including bug fixes, balance adjustments, and a ranked matchmaking system designed to group players by skill level to prevent dominance by veteran users.
