Golden Mile Special Yong Tau Foo, a long-standing fixture of the local hawker scene since 1958, has officially ceased operations at the Golden Mile Food Centre. The closure, which occurred without a public announcement, marks the end of a 68-year legacy for the family-run business.
News of the closure was confirmed on July 31 by a neighbouring merchant, Ah Xiao Teochew Braised Duck, via a social media post. According to the announcement, the vacated unit is slated to be replaced by a new dessert stall. The sudden departure of the stall, which lacked its own digital presence, has left many longtime patrons surprised.
Founded by Chng Siew Hern, the stall originated as a pushcart along Jalan Sultan before relocating to the Golden Mile Food Centre upon its opening in 1975. The business was later managed by second-generation hawkers, including Chng Fang Khiang. The stall was widely recognized for its authentic Teochew-style yong tau foo, characterized by the use of fresh yellowtail fish, which was minced daily and hand-beaten into a springy paste for fishballs and stuffed ingredients.
Despite the lack of an official statement regarding the reasons for the closure or the future plans of the owners, the stall had remained popular among diners, with queues frequently forming as recently as February of this year. The stall’s departure leaves a significant void for enthusiasts of traditional, handmade hawker fare.
