A Tragic Conclusion to a Heroic Journey
The Australian community is mourning the loss of Bob Montgomery, an 82-year-old charity cyclist who passed away unexpectedly just one day after completing a monumental 5,300-kilometre journey across the country. Montgomery, a dedicated advocate for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research, died following a medical episode that led to a vehicle crash on Monday evening.
According to reports from NSW Police and 2GB, the incident occurred at approximately 7pm on Monday inside the M5 East Tunnel at Arncliffe. Montgomery was travelling with his wife of 59 years, Jenny, when he suffered a medical episode. Their vehicle collided with a side wall, and while Jenny Montgomery was treated at the scene and taken to St George Hospital in stable condition, Bob Montgomery passed away after being admitted in critical condition.
The Legacy of ‘One Last Ride’
Montgomery and his 18-year-old grandson, Tom Malcolm, had concluded their “Miles for MND: One Last Ride” campaign on Sunday, arriving in Bowral to a hero’s welcome. The six-week expedition, which began on June 22 in Broome, spanned Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales. The effort raised over $100,000 for MND NSW, contributing to a total of more than $300,000 raised by Montgomery across five major charity rides over the past 12 years—a commitment sparked by the death of his cousin from the disease.
MND NSW chief executive Liam O’Meara lauded Montgomery as an “incredible man” and a “massive stalwart” for the community. “He didn’t have to do any of this. He chose to do it. And I think that’s just the mark of the man,” O’Meara stated. The organization is now considering a posthumous accolade and the establishment of a memorial ride to honor his enduring legacy.
A Community in Mourning
The family expressed their gratitude for the “overwhelming kindness, love and messages of support” received since the tragedy. In a statement, they noted that Jenny Montgomery was by her husband’s side during his peaceful passing. The rapid transition from the celebratory atmosphere of Sunday’s finish line—which featured supporters and former athletes—to Monday’s tragic accident has left the MND community in shock.
Montgomery’s final ride was physically and mentally demanding, involving navigation through harsh headwinds and desert terrain. Despite the challenges, he remained committed to the goal of raising awareness and funding for essential equipment and specialist care for those living with MND. His impact continues to resonate, with the funds raised providing direct support to families and patients navigating the disease.
