ASHEVILLE (Azat TV) – U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards announced on the morning of August 5 that he is ending his reelection campaign for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District. The decision follows a recommendation from the House Ethics Committee that he be censured due to an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment involving two female staff members. According to an August 3 committee report, Edwards allegedly sent intimate late-night messages and provided gifts, including electronics and vacations, to the staffers.
The withdrawal has triggered a compressed selection process for the Republican Party. Under state law, the district’s executive committee—comprised of approximately 60 members—must designate a replacement on the ballot at least 75 days before the general election, setting a firm deadline of August 20. The North Carolina Republican Party has indicated that a meeting to determine the new candidate will take place during the week of August 10.
Potential Candidates and Strategic Stakes
As the GOP pivots, several names have emerged as potential contenders. State Sen. Tim Moffitt, who has served two terms in the Senate and three in the House, confirmed he is in discussions with district leaders regarding a potential candidacy. Moffitt emphasized the need for a conservative who can build an immediate, well-funded campaign to hold the seat.
Adam Smith, a former Green Beret who challenged Edwards in the 2026 primary and secured nearly 30% of the vote, has also expressed interest. Smith stated that he remains ready to step into the role if nominated, pledging to support whoever the committee ultimately selects. Christian Reagan, a mortgage broker and previous challenger, has likewise signaled his availability to the 11th District Republican Party leadership.
However, the search is complicated by logistical hurdles. Political analysts, including Michael Bitzer of Catawba College, note that any new candidate faces a significant challenge in launching a full-scale operation in under three months. Furthermore, selecting a sitting legislator like Senator Moffitt would require him to vacate his current seat, creating additional political ripples within the state legislature.
A Shifting Political Landscape
The urgency of the selection process is underscored by the current state of the race. While the 11th District has historically leaned Republican, recent dynamics have shifted. Federal Election Commission filings as of June 30 show Democratic challenger Ager has raised $3.05 million, significantly outpacing Edwards’ $939,985. Political science experts suggest that the Republican nominee will face an uphill battle, requiring an immediate influx of financial resources and organizational support to regain momentum against a well-funded opponent.
