Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has officially weighed in on his successor, Mike McCarthy, offering a strong vote of confidence as the team prepares for the 2026 NFL season. During his debut as an analyst on NBC’s Football Night In America, which aired ahead of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game, Tomlin described the hiring of McCarthy as an ideal match for the organization.
A Seamless Transition
Tomlin, who concluded a historic 19-year tenure with Pittsburgh earlier this year, emphasized that McCarthy’s deep roots in the city and his extensive coaching resume make him uniquely qualified to lead. “I know a little bit about the Steelers situation to say the least,” Tomlin remarked during the broadcast. “It’s perfect for them, and they’re perfect for Mike. Certainly, being a Pittsburgh native, he understands the standard that is Pittsburgh, and he’ll embrace that.”
McCarthy was hired on January 24, 2026, roughly ten days after Tomlin announced his resignation. Tomlin pointed to McCarthy’s history of success—notably his previous work with quarterback Aaron Rodgers—as a significant asset. “He’s got an awesome résumé. Obviously, the confetti’s rained down on him before with his current quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. There’s no substitute for shared success,” Tomlin added.
Managing High Expectations
While Tomlin expressed optimism, he acknowledged the immense pressure facing the new regime. The Steelers have not secured a playoff victory since 2016, a drought that has become a central narrative for the fan base. Tomlin drew a parallel between the Steelers’ current situation and the long-term postseason struggles of teams like the New York Knicks or the Buffalo Bills.
“When you’re running knee-deep into the playoffs but you don’t get to your desired destination, there’s some expectations that come with transition,” Tomlin noted. He expressed that while McCarthy is well-equipped to handle the scrutiny, the primary challenge remains translating regular-season competitiveness into deep postseason runs, a hurdle that Tomlin admitted was difficult during the latter years of his own tenure.
