Investigation into Targeted Infrastructure Damage
London police are actively investigating an act of deliberate vandalism after a hydro pole in the city’s south end was intentionally cut down using a chainsaw, resulting in a widespread power outage. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, October 6, prompted an emergency response from local law enforcement, the London Fire Department, and utility crews from London Hydro.
Authorities reported that emergency teams were dispatched to the area near Exeter Road and Meg Drive at approximately 5:45 p.m. following reports of a loud noise accompanied by smoke and flames. Upon arrival, crews discovered multiple downed power lines and a severely damaged hydro pole that had been carrying a three-phase transformer bank. The destruction of this critical infrastructure caused immediate power disruptions for more than 1,000 customers in the surrounding area, according to reports from SSBCrack.
Impact and Restoration Efforts
The intentional felling of the pole presented significant safety hazards to the community, as the damage triggered a localized fire in addition to the blackout. Utility workers were tasked with a complex and dangerous repair operation, which involved securing downed lines and replacing the transformer equipment to restore service. While the damage is estimated at approximately $10,000, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident or the subsequent emergency response. London Hydro crews have since completed the necessary repairs, and power has been fully restored to all affected residences and businesses.
Suspect Identification and Public Appeal
In an effort to identify those responsible, investigators have released images of a suspect and a vehicle believed to be connected to the crime. The suspect is described as a white man wearing a ball cap, a black hooded sweatshirt with writing across the chest, and grey pants. The vehicle involved is identified as a grey sport utility vehicle, potentially a 2019 Honda CR-V or a similar model.
Police are urging anyone who was present in the vicinity of Exeter Road between 5:20 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday to come forward. Investigators are specifically seeking dashcam, residential, or business surveillance footage that may have captured the suspect or the vehicle during the time of the incident. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the motive behind this act of infrastructure sabotage.
