Singapore Grand Prix Organizers Prepare Contingency Plans as Haze Persists

The Singapore city skyline and Marina Bay area obscured by thick haze at night

Quick Read

  • The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix race schedule remains unaffected by the ongoing regional haze.
  • Air quality has reached the 'unhealthy' range, with PSI readings exceeding 100 in all five city regions.
  • Organizers have contingency plans for outdoor entertainment if conditions worsen.
  • N95 masks and medical assistance will be available on-site at the Marina Bay circuit.
  • Meteorological forecasts suggest weekend rain may help clear the smoke.

Monitoring Air Quality Ahead of Race Weekend

As the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix approaches, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has confirmed that while the main Formula 1 race will proceed as scheduled, contingency plans are in place to manage the impact of ongoing regional haze. According to Devdiscourse, officials are closely monitoring air quality levels after weeks of smoke from Indonesian forest fires blanketed the city-state, pushing air quality into the “unhealthy” range.

Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) reported that all five regions of the city recorded 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings above 100 on Tuesday, officially entering the unhealthy category. As noted by GPFans, the central region recorded a PSI of 133 at midday, with elevated PM2.5 readings persisting throughout the week. The haze, exacerbated by a strong El Niño weather pattern, has resulted in the most intense fire season in the region in over a decade.

Contingency Plans and Public Health

While the track action remains unaffected, the FIA and local organizers have signaled that outdoor entertainment and spectator activities could face restrictions if air quality deteriorates further. The Singapore Tourism Board stated that it is working with relevant agencies to assess the situation and will implement safety measures if necessary. This includes providing N95 masks at the Marina Bay circuit and ensuring medical assistance is readily available for all personnel and attendees.

Drivers have remained largely unfazed by the conditions. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton noted that while landing in the city was difficult due to the smog, the focus remains on the race. Similarly, Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas indicated that the situation, while not ideal, does not currently present an extreme barrier to competition.

Weather Forecast and Future Outlook

Meteorological services expect rain showers throughout the weekend, which may provide some relief from the smoke. However, prevailing winds from the southeast are expected to continue pushing haze toward Singapore from hotspots in Sumatra and Kalimantan. The Meteorological Service Singapore suggests that while thunderstorms are likely, the persistent dry conditions in the region may keep air quality levels elevated until the fires are fully contained.
