Former Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has confirmed she will not contest her seat of Bendigo East at the upcoming November state election. Her departure signals a definitive conclusion to a parliamentary career that began in 1999 when she was elected as the youngest Victorian woman in history at the age of 25.
Speaking at a press conference in Bendigo, Ms. Allan reflected on her two-and-a-half decades of service, highlighting both the successes of her tenure and the deteriorating state of public discourse. “I do not remember a time when our foundations have felt so unsteady,” she stated, noting that social cohesion is under significant pressure and that the distinction between truth and misinformation is becoming increasingly blurred.

Ms. Allan’s premiership, which began in September 2023 following the resignation of Daniel Andrews, was marked by significant internal and external challenges. Her resignation in July followed growing discontent within the Labor party, fueled by plummeting popularity polls, controversies surrounding the fire services levy, and allegations of criminal infiltration within government construction sites. Her deputy, Ben Carroll, assumed the premiership immediately following her departure and has since sought to distance his administration from his predecessors, including the initiation of a Royal Commission into the construction sector.
During her career, Ms. Allan served as Australia’s longest-serving female minister. With the upcoming election, analysts suggest the seat—along with neighbouring Bendigo West—could become competitive, potentially vulnerable to challenges from the Nationals or One Nation. As of mid-August 2026, the Labor Party has not yet announced a successor candidate for the seat.
