Roster Adjustments Following Injury Concerns

The New York Jets are navigating a series of early-season injury setbacks as they prepare for their home opener against the Green Bay Packers. Following a 23-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 1, head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed on Wednesday that safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. are considered “week to week” due to injuries sustained in the win.

Fitzpatrick, a critical piece of the Jets’ secondary, suffered a groin injury early in the Tennessee matchup. Cooper, a first-round draft selection, exited the game after recording a 30-yard catch-and-run during the team’s opening touchdown drive. According to The Herald Review, Glenn noted that neither player is currently a candidate for the injured reserve list, which would mandate a minimum four-week absence.

Secondary and Receiving Corps Depth

The absence of both starters forces the Jets to rely on their depth chart. Coach Glenn expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt, highlighting the experience of backups Dane Belton and Andre Cisco, who saw increased action following Fitzpatrick’s departure last Sunday. “Cisco’s played a lot of football in this league,” Glenn stated. “He’s been a damn good player. Dane, we talked about how impressed I was at how he can come in and he can play basically the same role that Minkah had.”

To bolster the secondary, the team signed defensive back Jordan Clark to the active roster from the practice squad. Clark, an undrafted rookie who appeared in six games last season, provides immediate coverage depth. Meanwhile, at the receiver position, Jets Wire reports that the team has signed veteran Sterling Shepard and Tyler Johnson to the practice squad to replenish depth lost by Cooper’s injury.

Evaluation of Additional Personnel

Beyond the immediate starters, the Jets are monitoring the progress of edge rusher Joseph Ossai and running back/kick returner Kene Nwangwu. Both players missed the season opener due to foot and back injuries, respectively. Ossai, who sustained a ruptured plantar fascia during the preseason finale on August 28, is reportedly nearing a return to full participation, though he remains on a week-to-week evaluation schedule.

As the Jets prepare for Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium, the focus remains on maintaining stability. The team has a chance to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2015, provided the roster adjustments can successfully offset the current injury attrition.
