A New Chapter for San Diego
Kwanza Jones and José Feliciano, both alumni of Princeton University, have completed the acquisition of the San Diego Padres for a record-breaking $3.9 billion, The Daily Princetonian reported on September 25, 2026. The deal marks a significant shift in ownership for the Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise as it prepares for the upcoming postseason.
Jones and Feliciano, who met as undergraduates at Princeton, bring prior sports management experience to the organization. Feliciano is a co-founder of Clearlake Capital, which recently secured full ownership of the Premier League club Chelsea F.C. after acquiring the stakes previously held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter. The couple has expressed a long-term commitment to the Padres, emphasizing their intention to balance financial investment with a focus on team culture.
Management and Competitive Strategy
The new owners face the immediate challenge of navigating a competitive National League West division, currently dominated by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite the rivalry, the Padres have maintained a consistent playoff presence, appearing in the postseason in every year since 2022, with the exception of 2023. Jones and Feliciano confirmed that they intend to retain the current leadership structure, including President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller, citing the existing expertise within the organization.
“There is a lot of expertise already in the organization,” the owners wrote in a statement to The Daily Princetonian. “We want to listen and learn, but we are also going to bring our own ideas and perspectives.” The duo plans to challenge conventional wisdom when necessary while fostering a collaborative environment aimed at sustained winning.
Financial and Institutional Stakes
The $3.9 billion valuation reflects the high premium placed on major sports franchises, even as the league navigates potential labor tensions. The MLB Players Union and team owners are currently in discussions regarding the next Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), with the issue of a potential hard salary cap remaining a central point of contention. Despite these broader industry uncertainties, Jones and Feliciano have pledged both financial resources and time to the Padres.
Petco Park, the Padres’ home stadium, remains a significant asset, having consistently ranked among the top five in MLB for fan attendance since 2020. The owners have identified connecting with this fan base as a priority, noting that the passion of the San Diego community is a critical component of the team’s future success.
