This sale marks the highest public price ever recorded for a Lamine Yamal trading card. The “one-of-one” designation indicates that this is the only copy of this specific black parallel in existence, a factor that significantly drove demand among elite collectors looking to secure a piece of history from a player who has already achieved world championship status at a young age.
Outperforming legends
The auction results provided a clear indicator of the market’s current enthusiasm for Yamal. The $707,600 price point did not merely set a personal record; it soundly outperformed items associated with football legends Pele and Lionel Messi sold at the same event. A graded 1958 Pele rookie card fetched $610,000, while a unique 2023-24 Topps Chrome Sapphire Lionel Messi card sold for $317,200. Yamal’s card eclipsed the Pele lot by nearly $100,000 and more than doubled the price of the unique Messi piece, signaling a potential shift in collector focus toward the sport’s newest generation of superstars.
Broadening the investment base
The financial fervor surrounding Yamal extended well beyond a single card. The auction also saw the sale of a gold Kaboom rookie card (numbered 8/10) for $189,100, and a match-worn Barcelona home shirt from the 2023-24 Champions League season, which commanded $152,500. Combined, these three items generated over $1 million for the auction house, highlighting the depth of demand for authentic, high-value memorabilia related to the teenager.
While Yamal dominated the headlines, the event also showcased the enduring market for historical figures. Diego Maradona’s 1977 disc rookie card achieved a sale of $103,700, and a black Kaboom card of the Argentine legend reached $91,500, proving that while contemporary stars like Yamal are setting new price ceilings, the historical significance of past icons remains a cornerstone of the collectibles industry.
