More than 155 scientists, physicians, and public health advocates have issued an open letter calling for an immediate end to the “vilification and harassment” of American scientists. The letter, published on July 28, 2026, specifically identifies the Trump administration and its congressional allies as the primary drivers of a campaign that signatories describe as a “war on individual scientists.”
The appeal comes just one day before Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is scheduled to testify under subpoena before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. The committee, chaired by Senator Rand Paul, has been investigating the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic and allegations that federal officials, including Fauci, misled the public.
The Focus on Dr. Fauci
The signatories argue that Dr. Fauci has become the “most prominent target” of a coordinated effort to discredit public health leadership. The letter explicitly rejects allegations that Fauci covered up the origins of the virus, bribed other scientists, or suppressed information regarding a potential lab leak. “No credible evidence has been produced to support these absurd charges,” the authors stated.
Dr. Fauci, 85, who led the NIAID for 38 years, has faced years of scrutiny. While he has maintained that natural origins are the most likely explanation for the virus, he has consistently stated that he keeps an “open mind” regarding other possibilities. Despite a pre-emptive pardon issued by Joe Biden before the end of his term, Senator Paul has referred the matter to the Department of Justice for potential criminal prosecution.

Ahead of the hearing, Senator Paul released thousands of pages of Dr. Fauci’s personal diary entries from the pandemic era. The documents contain candid reflections on Fauci’s interactions with Donald Trump, his media image, and his frustrations with the administrative handling of the crisis. Recent reports indicate the diaries include sharp critiques of the former president.
President Trump responded to the release on Tuesday, expressing that he grew tired of Fauci’s prominent role during the administration. The ongoing legal and political pressure remains a point of intense polarization, with the scientific community warning that such “witch-hunts” undermine innovation and public health guidance in the United States.
