Macarthur FC has officially announced the appointment of former Socceroos defender Sasa Ognenovski as the new Head Coach of their A-League Men’s squad. According to official club statements, the 47-year-old has committed to a two-year contract that will keep him at the helm of the South Western Sydney club until the end of the 2027/28 season. The appointment comes at a critical juncture, with the club seeking immediate stability following a sudden leadership transition during the pre-season phase.
A Swift Transition Ahead of the Season Opener
Ognenovski’s arrival follows the mutual termination of former head coach Mile Sterjovski’s contract, a development that left the Bulls without a manager less than two months before the commencement of the 2026/27 A-League Men campaign. Sterjovski, who led the Bulls to an Australia Cup triumph in 2024, departed abruptly, forcing the club’s administration to act swiftly to secure a replacement capable of navigating the final stages of pre-season preparations. Macarthur FC is scheduled to open their campaign at home against Perth Glory on October 17, leaving Ognenovski with a narrow window to implement his tactical framework and assess his playing squad.
A Highly Decorated Continental Career
The newly appointed manager brings an extensive and highly decorated footballing pedigree to the Bulls. During his playing career as a commanding central defender, Ognenovski represented Brisbane Roar, Adelaide United, and Sydney FC in the domestic league. His most notable achievements, however, occurred on the continental stage. In 2010, he captained South Korean powerhouse Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma to victory in the AFC Champions League, scoring in the final and subsequently being named the Asian Footballer of the Year by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). On the international stage, Ognenovski earned 22 caps for the Australian national team, anchoring the defense during a highly competitive era for the Socceroos.
Following his retirement from professional playing, Ognenovski transitioned into football administration and coaching development. He most recently served as the Football Director for NPL Victoria side Preston Lions FC, where he managed sporting operations and laid the groundwork for his transition into top-flight professional management. The role at Macarthur represents his first head coaching appointment in the A-League Men, testing his ability to translate continental playing success into elite-level technical leadership.
Establishing High Professional Standards
In his first official address to the club’s supporters and stakeholders, Ognenovski expressed a deep sense of responsibility and excitement regarding the project in South Western Sydney. “It is a privilege to be working at the highest level of football in Australia, and I understand the responsibility that comes with representing this club, its supporters, and the wider community,” Ognenovski stated. He emphasized that his discussions with the club’s board revealed a shared determination to build a structured, high-performance environment designed to foster player development and maintain strict professional standards.
Detailing his tactical philosophy, Ognenovski promised a proactive and resilient style of play. “Bulls fans can expect relentless effort, total commitment, and an entertaining brand of football. We will play forward with bravery and purpose,” he added, signaling a departure from conservative tactical setups. His primary challenge will be to quickly align the existing squad—assembled largely under his predecessor—with this high-intensity, forward-playing model before competitive fixtures begin in mid-October.
