The Seattle Mariners’ 4-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night was marred by a bench-clearing incident in the eighth inning, resulting in the ejections of Mariners relief pitcher Gabe Speier and manager Dan Wilson.
The tension escalated after Speier threw two consecutive pitches inside to Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres, the second of which struck Torres on the hip. Following the contact, Torres and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh exchanged words. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch immediately entered the field to petition for Speier’s ejection, prompting players and coaches from both bullpens to clear onto the field.
The incident followed a sequence in the seventh inning where Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh was hit by a pitch from Tigers left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus, leading to speculation that Speier’s actions were retaliatory. Despite the ejection of Speier, the Mariners maintained their lead, bolstered by a solo home run from Colt Emerson in the ninth inning. Julio Rodríguez also contributed with a three-run homer in the sixth, and starting pitcher Bryan Woo delivered seven shutout innings.
