EU MEP Slams Kaja Kallas Over Azerbaijan Visit

On April 24, 2025, Greek Member of the European Parliament Fragkos Fragkoulis publicly criticized Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, over her upcoming visit to Azerbaijan scheduled for April 25.

In a post on his official X account (formerly Twitter), Fragkoulis condemned the decision, raising concerns about the message this sends to democratic Armenia. “Armenia chooses democracy, adopts EU accession law, faces threats, yet the EU’s top diplomat visits autocratic Azerbaijan. Why reward the aggressor and ignore the reformer?” he wrote.

Fragkoulis’ remarks come at a time when Armenia is navigating increased tensions while pursuing deeper ties with the European Union. The country recently approved a legislative framework aimed at launching the EU accession process and continues to face regional security challenges, including hostile actions from Azerbaijan.

The criticism sheds light on broader debates within the EU over balancing diplomacy and values. Fragkoulis implied that such visits risk undermining the credibility of EU foreign policy, especially when perceived as supportive of regimes engaged in aggression against neighboring democracies.

As of now, Kaja Kallas has not responded publicly to the MEP’s comments.
