Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher addressed the public on Monday following a deadly shooting incident in the city’s Cote-des-Neiges borough. The altercation, which began around 11:35 a.m. local time, resulted in the deaths of one police officer and one civilian woman. Chief Dagher characterized the event as “one of the very worst nightmares” of his tenure.
Operational Status
During a press conference, Dagher confirmed that the primary suspect had been “neutralized” at the scene. While an initial shelter-in-place order was issued by Quebec authorities due to concerns of a potential second gunman, police later clarified that the threat was contained and only one suspect was involved. Dagher stated that while the immediate danger has passed, the investigation remains active as authorities process the crime scene.
A Rare Line-of-Duty Death
This incident marks a grim milestone for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). According to Chief Dagher, it has been 24 years since a Montreal police officer was killed in the line of duty. Dagher paid tribute to the fallen officer, describing him as a highly credible and passionate member of the force. A second officer was also reported injured during the exchange of fire, though their current condition remains under official review.
