NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover has reached a key mission milestone, logging a total vertical elevation gain of 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) since beginning its ascent of Mount Sharp in 2014, space agency officials confirmed.

To mark the achievement, NASA released a panoramic composite view assembled from 323 individual images captured by Curiosity’s Mastcam instrument on August 1 and August 2, 2026. The imagery, taken on the rover’s 4,972nd and 4,973rd Martian days (sols), reveals the expansive floor and northern rim of “Valle Grande,” a broad depression along the slopes of the 5-kilometer-tall (3-mile-tall) mountain located inside Gale Crater.

Curiosity landed on Mars in August 2012 via a sky-crane landing maneuver managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Over its 14-year operational timeline on the Red Planet, the SUV-sized mobile laboratory has provided pivotal geological and atmospheric data, confirming that liquid water once flowed across the Martian surface and identifying complex organic molecules that serve as key chemical building blocks for potential habitability.

Despite sustained wear on its aluminum wheels from navigating rugged terrain, NASA engineers report that Curiosity retains fully functional scientific payloads and sufficient power reserves to continue its climbing campaign up Mount Sharp. Concurrently, NASA’s Perseverance rover, operating in Jezero Crater, recently surpassed 42.2 kilometers (26.2 miles) of total cumulative travel across Mars, marking a separate distance benchmark for human robotic exploration beyond Earth.
