A New Chapter for the Kangaroos
North Melbourne has officially confirmed the appointment of Jaymie Graham as the club’s new senior coach. The 43-year-old, who previously served as a trusted assistant to Justin Longmuir at the Fremantle Dockers, has signed a three-year contract to lead the Kangaroos. The announcement, made by club president Sonja Hood, comes nearly five weeks after the club’s decision to part ways with four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson.
Graham’s appointment follows what the club described as a “thorough and extensive” search process. According to Fox Sports, Graham emerged as the unanimous choice of the selection panel, having impressed during interviews. He beat out a shortlist of candidates that included Daniel Giansiracusa, David Hale, and Xavier Clarke. Collingwood legend Nathan Buckley had also been considered but withdrew from the process shortly before the final decision.
Strategic Vision and Club Alignment
During his introductory media appearance, Graham emphasized his commitment to a “process-driven” approach. He identified specific areas for improvement, noting that the Kangaroos must focus on team defense and improving ball turnover efficiency closer to the opposition’s goal. “There’s clearly some talent on this list and also some work to do,” Graham told reporters. “I’m a real system-based, role-based coach and it takes a collective to get the job done.”
Hood praised Graham’s resilience and character, highlighting his tenure at the West Coast Eagles—where he was part of the 2018 premiership staff—and his recent work with Fremantle’s forward line as evidence of his ability to develop talent. Graham, who played 37 games for West Coast during his own playing career, acknowledged the challenge of moving his family from Western Australia but expressed confidence that North Melbourne was the right fit for his first senior head coaching role.
Departure from Fremantle
The move leaves the Fremantle Dockers with a significant gap in their coaching ranks. The club recently announced the departures of Adam Read and Todd Curley, meaning the Dockers are currently restructuring their coaching department for the 2027 season. Fremantle football manager Joe Brierty expressed gratitude for Graham’s five years of service, noting that the club was supportive of his ambition to lead his own team.
Graham arrives at North Melbourne at a critical juncture. The club has endured a 10-season finals drought, representing the longest current absence in the AFL. He will have an immediate impact on the club’s upcoming trade and draft activities as he looks to reshape the list for the 2027 campaign.
