The 97.9% utilization rate represents a significant increase from 93% in the previous quarter and 77% for the entirety of fiscal 2026, according to analysis from The Motley Fool. This sustained high intensity suggests that the market is absorbing new infrastructure as rapidly as vendors can deploy it.

Pricing Power and Aging Hardware

Perhaps the most compelling evidence of a supply constraint is the performance of older equipment. Oracle’s co-CEO, Clay Magouyrk, confirmed that GPU capacity up for renewal during the quarter was repriced at a 20% premium compared to prior contracts. Notably, the majority of the hardware in question consisted of chips four years or older—a generation that predates the current high-demand Blackwell architecture.

In a standard, well-supplied market, computing hardware typically depreciates as it ages. The fact that older systems are commanding a 20% price increase indicates that enterprise customers are willing to pay significant premiums simply to secure access to any available compute power, underscoring the severity of the ongoing shortage.

Institutional Stakes and Future Outlook

Oracle’s infrastructure growth remains substantial, with the company delivering 850 megawatts of AI capacity in a single quarter—nearly triple the volume of the previous quarter. The company’s campus in Abilene, Texas, which supports OpenAI, alone received 131,000 GPUs during this period. Despite this, Oracle’s remaining performance obligations—contracted revenue yet to be delivered—have surged to $664 billion.

For Nvidia (NVDA), which serves as the primary provider for these clusters, the data provides a clear picture of the bottleneck. While Nvidia’s management has consistently signaled that its compute is fully utilized, Oracle’s specific decimal-point disclosure moves the narrative from vendor assurance to customer-side validation.
