  • Former GM Steve Phillips suggests trading Miller to acquire starting pitching and offense.

With the 2026 MLB trade deadline rapidly approaching, the San Diego Padres have become a focal point of league-wide speculation. Following a challenging season that has left the team 15 games behind in their division and struggling with a depleted rotation and inconsistent offense, management is weighing a potential pivot.

Former general manager Steve Phillips, speaking on MLB Now, argued that the Padres should leverage their bullpen surplus to address their primary needs. Phillips identified Mason Miller, the team’s dominant closer, as their most valuable trade asset. “If the Padres think they’re in it, and they’re gonna go for it, they need starting pitching and offense,” Phillips stated. “And Mason Miller is the biggest chip that they have.”

Miller has been a rare bright spot for the club, recording a 0.98 ERA with 67 strikeouts across 36.2 innings, placing him in early Cy Young Award discussions. Despite his individual success, the team has lost nine of its last 10 games and currently sits 4.5 games out of an NL Wild-Card spot. President of baseball operations A.J. Preller, who acquired Miller from the Athletics last summer, now faces a critical decision: hold onto the star closer or trade him to acquire the starting pitching and hitting depth required to salvage the 2026 campaign.
