A Significant Loss for the CAQ
Quebec Labour Minister and MNA for Trois-Rivières, Jean Boulet, has officially announced his departure from provincial politics. According to reports from the Montreal Gazette, Boulet confirmed he will not stand for re-election in the upcoming fall vote, marking him as the 32nd member of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) caucus to step down.
Boulet’s decision follows weeks of speculation regarding his political future. Rather than attending the final cabinet meeting before the summer recess in Quebec City, the minister is scheduled to be in Ottawa to participate in Fête nationale celebrations in his capacity as minister for Canadian relations.
A Legacy of Reform
Throughout his eight-year tenure, Boulet was recognized for his role in navigating complex and often contentious legislative files. He was instrumental in the modernization of Quebec’s workplace health insurance plan, a reform that required significant political tact.
His departure comes amid a period of heightened tension for provincial representatives. In May, Boulet filed a formal police complaint following the circulation of a video in which protesters used a makeshift guillotine to behead a puppet depicting him. While the specifics of his post-political plans remain undisclosed, his exit is viewed as a substantial loss for the CAQ leadership team, which is currently bracing for a challenging electoral cycle.
