Speaking on CNN, Adams described Kennedy’s actions as “dangerous” and “uniquely damaging” to public trust in federal health agencies like the CDC, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He specifically criticized Kennedy’s restrictive policies on COVID-19 vaccine eligibility, which have limited access for at-risk populations, including Black, Hispanic, and Native American communities. According to Adams, these policies are “putting lives at risk.”
Adams co-authored a bipartisan opinion piece in USA Today with two other former surgeons general, Jocelyn Elders and Richard Carmona, warning that Kennedy’s leadership threatens the CDC’s integrity. The article stated, “The recent turbulence at the CDC threatens to undermine its legacy, and we feel this is not just a bureaucratic or political issue. It’s truly a matter of life and death.” This follows Kennedy’s June decision to dismiss all 17 members of the CDC’s advisory committee on immunization practices and replace them with individuals who hold anti-vaccine views, a move that has led to chaos within the organization.
Family Members Join the Call for Resignation
The criticism hasn’t been limited to political figures. On Friday, Kennedy’s sister Kerry Kennedy and his nephew Joe Kennedy III also called for his resignation. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kerry Kennedy wrote, “Medical decisions belong in the hands of trained and licensed professionals, not incompetent and misguided leadership. Enough is enough.” Joe Kennedy III echoed these sentiments, stating that his uncle’s actions are “a threat to the health and well-being of every American.” He added, “The challenges before us demand moral clarity, scientific expertise, and leadership rooted in fact. Those values are not present in the Secretary’s office.”
This is not the first time RFK Jr. has faced criticism from his family. During the 2024 presidential election, several members of the Kennedy family openly opposed his independent presidential campaign, claiming he did not represent the values or vision of their father, former Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
Congressional Hearing Highlights Controversy
The uproar intensified after Kennedy’s contentious appearance before the Senate Finance Committee on Thursday. During the hearing, he defended his controversial changes to the CDC, arguing that they were necessary to restore the agency’s credibility as a “gold standard” in public health. However, his statements on vaccine efficacy and his decision to fire CDC Director Susan Monarez in August were met with bipartisan criticism. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren accused Kennedy of undermining public health by casting doubt on the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. In response, Kennedy questioned the reliability of clinical data supporting the vaccines.

He emphasized that certain vaccines “just pure and simple work” and should be used to protect public health. The controversy has also highlighted internal divisions within the Republican Party. While some Republicans, such as Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, have criticized Kennedy’s policies, others remain supportive.
