American rapper Rick Ross was arrested Thursday morning in Miami Beach in connection with a domestic violence investigation, according to law enforcement authorities. The artist, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts, was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 6:10 a.m. facing a felony charge of battery by strangulation, online jail records show.

The arrest stems from an investigation initiated after the victim, identified in an arrest report from the Miami Beach Police Department as his ex-girlfriend, visited the police department on Tuesday. The victim reported that an alleged domestic violence incident occurred on the morning of Aug. 28 at a residence on Star Island, an exclusive neighborhood in Miami Beach where the couple lived together during their roughly one-year relationship, according to NBC News.

Court Appearance and Bond Proceedings

Following his surrender to authorities Thursday morning, the 50-year-old artist appeared in bond court before Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer. During the hearing, defense attorney Bradley Horenstein asked the court to expedite his client’s release, citing security concerns due to the rapper’s celebrity status and his prison-issued red jumpsuit.

Judge Glazer rejected the argument regarding celebrity status, stating that the defendant would receive fair treatment identical to any other individual in the facility. According to Local 10, the judge set a $5,000 bond for the battery by strangulation charge, alongside a mandatory stay-away order prohibiting any contact with the accuser.

Denial of Allegations and Public Response

Outside the correctional facility following his release, Ross addressed reporters and maintained his innocence regarding the allegations. “First and foremost, I am totally innocent of these fabricated allegations made against me,” Ross said, according to ABC News. He added that he intends to proceed with scheduled international travel over the weekend.

The investigation remains ongoing as legal proceedings advance through the Miami-Dade County court system.
