Mark Cerny, the lead systems architect for PlayStation, validated the company’s long-term pivot toward machine-learning-driven rendering during an industry deep dive on March 23, 2026.

The Next Phase of PlayStation Performance

While the current PlayStation 5 ecosystem has already integrated PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to handle AI-based upscaling, Cerny noted that frame generation represents the logical next phase for the platform. This technology functions by utilizing machine learning algorithms to analyze sequential frames and synthesize new ones, effectively doubling perceived smoothness and reducing the processing burden on the console’s GPU.

According to HotHardware, the initiative is being developed in close collaboration with AMD. The technology aims to transcend the current hardware limitations that force players to choose between high-fidelity 4K visuals at 30 frames per second or lower-resolution performance modes at 60 frames per second.
