Unlike the adaptive triggers currently found in the DualSense controller, this concept allows buttons to soften, letting a player’s finger sink into the surface before hardening again. According to the patent documentation, this mechanism could physically “grasp” a user’s finger to simulate specific in-game events. For instance, a reload button could increase in resistance if a weapon jams, or an action button could hold a finger to mimic being grabbed by an in-game entity.
While the technology represents a significant leap in tactile feedback, it remains in the conceptual phase. Sony frequently files patents for experimental hardware, including recent concepts for buttonless controllers and PiP vertical video feeds, though not all designs reach commercial production. As of now, the company has made no official announcement regarding the implementation of this technology in future hardware.
