TAMPA, Fla. (Azat TV) – Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, in Florida by federal authorities in connection with allegations that he possessed child sexual abuse material, the Justice Department announced. CBS News reported that the arrest followed a multi-jurisdictional investigation spanning the Philippines, Mexico, and the United States, centering on storage units rented in the Los Angeles area.
Markle, 82, made his initial court appearance in federal court in Tampa on Friday afternoon, entering the courtroom in a wheelchair and wearing a black T-shirt. U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Wilson ordered Markle released on personal recognizance, subjecting him to home detention, electronic monitoring, and strict travel restrictions limiting his movement to the Middle District of Florida and the Central District of California.
Federal Charges and Evidence Recovered
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, Markle faces charges of possessing child sexual abuse material. Federal prosecutors stated that the 82-year-old allegedly maintained explicit materials, including photographs of himself with prepubescent girls, across two Los Angeles-area storage units that he had rented for nearly two decades with auto-pay maintaining the leases through October 2026.
An affidavit filed in federal court details that FBI agents seized 78 items from the units, encompassing slides, film negatives, and books. Investigators identified at least 18 images constituting suspected child pornography, including photographs allegedly showing Markle alongside a nude prepubescent girl in a motel room in the Philippines and other locations. “Mr. Markle allegedly targeted innocent children and sought to steal their innocence through his criminal actions,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement published by ABC News.
International Investigation and Family Disclosures
The federal case originated from multiple international reports. Last month, authorities in the Philippines launched an inquiry after Markle’s personal items and alleged files were turned over to law enforcement by his son, Thomas Markle Jr., who told British media he cut ties with his father. Concurrently, Mexican authorities confirmed that a search was conducted on Oct. 29 at a storage unit in Rosarito, Mexico, recovering old magazines and VHS tapes containing suspected illicit material, which were referred to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office.
Following the public disclosure of the investigation, Duchess Meghan released a statement through representatives noting that she had been aware of allegations against her father since 2018 and that the information had been shared with U.K. authorities at the time. Meghan stated that the estrangement and decision to bar her father from contact with her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, was strictly intended to protect them. Reports indicate Markle faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted, with future court proceedings yet to be scheduled in the Central District of California.
