PHILADELPHIA (Azat TV) – Uber Eats has expanded its innovative services by deploying autonomous food delivery robots across Philadelphia, marking a new phase in urban logistics. These robots, manufactured by Austin, Texas-based Avride, have been spotted in areas like Old City, Center City, and near Rittenhouse Square, aiming to streamline the delivery process for everyday needs.
The deployment in Philadelphia makes it the fourth U.S. city for Avride’s Uber Eats delivery robots, following successful launches in Austin, Dallas, and Jersey City, New Jersey. The initiative is part of a multiyear partnership between Avride and Uber, announced in October 2024, which integrates Avride’s sidewalk robots with the Uber Eats app for restaurant order fulfillment.
The robots, roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase, navigate sidewalks at speeds up to 5 mph. They are equipped with lidar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles from up to 200 feet away and can carry up to 55 pounds. Customers track their delivery in real-time via the Uber Eats app and unlock the insulated cargo compartment upon the robot’s arrival, with no tip charged for robot deliveries.
However, the arrival of these machines has not been without local discussion. Philadelphia residents have taken to social media, drawing comparisons to hitchBOT, a hitchhiking robot famously vandalized in the city in 2015. Reddit users have reported multiple sightings, with some joking about the robots’ fate or questioning their ability to handle Philadelphia’s uneven sidewalks and potholes. Beyond the humor, concerns have also been raised regarding pedestrian safety and accessibility, with some commenters noting that the robots could potentially impede pedestrian pathways or hinder ADA compliance.
Uber Eats has already completed hundreds of thousands of robot deliveries across more than 10 U.S. cities through partnerships with various robotics companies, including Serve Robotics, Coco Robotics, and Cartken.
