Negotiations Collapse for High-Profile Heavyweight Clash

Negotiations for a heavyweight showdown between Oleksandr Usyk and Deontay Wilder have reportedly been abandoned, with both fighters now being linked to alternative opponents. Usyk initially expressed interest in facing ‘The Bronze Bomber’ following his victory over former kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven last May, where he successfully defended his status before vacating his WBC, IBF, and WBA titles. According to Boxing News Online, the Ukrainian planned to make his next appearance his final career outing under Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing banner, with Wilder emerging as the primary target.

However, boxing journalist Mike Coppinger reported via social media that talks between Usyk and Wilder are now dead. The breakdown opens a new chapter for both heavyweights, who are actively pursuing separate paths as the division shifts toward winter and spring fixtures.

Wilder Eyes Cardiff Undercard and Alternative Opponents

Following the collapse of the Usyk talks, Deontay Wilder has quickly emerged as a central figure for alternative matchups. According to Boxing News Online, Wilder’s manager Shelly Finkel confirmed that the American fighter has accepted an offer to feature on the upcoming Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua undercard, slated for December 11 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Veteran reporter Dan Rafael noted that Wilder’s team is awaiting final confirmation regarding a proposed heavyweight bout against undefeated cruiserweight star Jai Opetaia.

In addition to the Opetaia matchup, Finkel revealed that exploratory talks have taken place regarding a potential fight against WBA ‘regular’ champion Murat Gassiev. Wilder enters these discussions following a split-decision victory over Derek Chisora last April, a bout in which he twice floored his opponent. Chisora, one of the few fighters to share the ring with both Usyk and Wilder, recently backed the American to secure a knockout victory if they ever met, telling Pro Boxing Fans that Wilder possesses the devastating power to end contests within five rounds.

Usyk’s Retirement Timeline and Potential Future Opponents

With his prospective bout against Wilder officially off the table, Oleksandr Usyk must look elsewhere for his anticipated farewell fight, which is expected to take place in early 2027. Among the alternative names circulating is unified cruiserweight champion David Benavidez. Benavidez has long maintained that facing Usyk would be an honor, though he previously focused on establishing dominance within the cruiserweight division. Benavidez recently indicated that if an anticipated clash with Opetaia cannot be finalized for Cinco de Mayo weekend in 2027, he intends to pursue a direct confrontation with Usyk instead. As boxing promoters finalize the calendar for late 2026 and early 2027, both Usyk and Wilder are positioned to shape the next phase of the heavyweight and cruiserweight landscapes.
