The construction project for the White House ballroom has seen its projected costs climb to $600 million, according to a report published Tuesday by the Washington Post. The figure represents a significant increase from original estimates, which had placed the cost at approximately $200 million.
Documents obtained by the Post, including a project summary from contractor Clark Construction dated March 5, indicate that the financial burden is being shared between private donors and federal agencies. While the administration previously suggested the project would be funded entirely through private contributions, internal estimates show that American taxpayers are responsible for approximately $307 million of the total cost.
The breakdown of public funding includes $155 million from the Secret Service, $149 million from the White House Military Office, and $3 million from the Executive Residence. These funds are reportedly designated for security enhancements, including the construction of a secure underground bunker, as part of the broader renovation that involved the demolition of the East Wing.
The revelation has sparked renewed debate over fiscal responsibility, particularly as the project’s scope has expanded beyond the initial ballroom plans. The administration has historically maintained that military and Secret Service expenditures were necessary upgrades, though officials have previously been vague regarding the specific dollar amounts involved in these security-related additions.
