A New Permanent Path for Azeroth
Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced World of Warcraft: Forever, a new, permanent home for players seeking to experience the original 2004 era of Azeroth. Unlike previous iterations of the franchise, Forever is designed to exist alongside modern and Classic WoW as a standalone environment that will not progress through traditional expansions. Instead, the developers intend to flesh out the existing 1–60 leveling experience with new, original content, taking inspiration from the Old School RuneScape model of community-driven updates, as reported by XDA Developers.
Set chronologically between the events of Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and the classic Molten Core raid, the game aims to provide a familiar yet expanded landscape. According to Blizzard, the global launch is scheduled for November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST, with access included in the standard World of Warcraft subscription.
Content and Technical Overhauls
The expansion-free roadmap for Forever includes substantial additions to the original world map. Players can expect three new zones—Mount Hyjal, Zephras Isle, and The Riverglades—along with nine additional dungeons and new 10-to-20-player raids, as detailed by The Express Tribune. The game will also introduce the Skyborne, a new neutral elven race, and a new battleground located on the Darkspear Islands.
Technical modernization is a core pillar of the release. The game will feature a new water renderer, real-time shadows, global illumination, and volumetric particle effects. Additionally, players will have the option to toggle between SD and HD character models, providing a bridge between legacy aesthetics and modern graphical capabilities.
Community and Progression
Progression in Forever will be supported by over 1,000 new quests added to the level 1–60 journey. The developers have also confirmed that some race and class combinations will deviate from the original 2004 limitations, such as the inclusion of Undead Paladins. Players will be able to engage in new reputation systems, which serve as a primary vehicle for unlocking items and account-wide perks.
For those interested in early access, a beta phase is set to begin on September 17. Access to this beta is available through the purchase of the ‘Skyborne Epic Pack’ or the ‘Warcraft Forever Collection’ on the Battle.net store. The development team, led by Senior Game Director Ion Hazzikostas, plans to provide further insights into the design philosophy during the ongoing BlizzCon 2026 events.
