As the aviation community marks the one-year anniversary of the June 12, 2025, crash of Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad, new evidence has surfaced that fundamentally challenges the official narrative surrounding the disaster. The crash, which claimed the lives of all 242 people on board and 19 individuals on the ground, remains one of the deadliest incidents in modern aviation. While initial interim reports from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) pointed toward potential pilot error, newly obtained maintenance records and ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) messages suggest a different reality: the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (VT-ANB) was suffering from critical technical malfunctions long before it ever left the runway.
The Technical Timeline
Data obtained by The Caravan provides a detailed look at the aircraft’s final hours. Maintenance analysis shows that the aircraft had reported faults in its stabilizer position sensor and electrical motor control unit during a previous flight from Delhi to Ahmedabad. Despite these repairs, fifteen minutes before the fatal takeoff, the aircraft’s Flight Control Modules (FCMs) began reporting recurring faults. According to industry experts, the aircraft was transmitting six “NO-GO” critical fault signals to both Air India and Boeing. Despite these explicit warnings, the aircraft was cleared for departure.
Systemic Vulnerabilities and the Common Core System
The analysis shifts focus toward the Boeing 787’s Common Core System (CCS). Designed to integrate flight-critical and non-flight-critical systems, the CCS has become a focal point for engineers who argue that a single point of failure within the aircraft’s electrical architecture may have caused a cascading “ground-mode” reboot mid-flight. Engineers suggest that a faulty inverter likely triggered a power surge, causing the flight computers to reset and inadvertently cutting fuel supply to the engines. This contradicts the AAIB’s suggestion that the pilot-in-command intentionally moved fuel switches to the CUTOFF position.
Institutional Accountability
The disclosures have reignited the debate over Boeing’s manufacturing and maintenance standards. Whistleblowers, including former Boeing engineer Ed Pierson, have long argued that cost-cutting measures and a shift in corporate priorities post-1997 have compromised the safety culture of the aerospace giant.
