BEND (Azat TV) – A 16-year-old armed with a pump-action shotgun forced his way into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon, killing three children and a teacher before being shot and killed by an intervening community member, police said.

The horrific attack in the high-desert tourism and recreation hub, located about 125 miles southeast of Portland, left three children aged 5, 8, and 11 dead at the scene. One teacher was also pronounced dead, while a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz.

The Timeline of the Attack

Law enforcement officials outlined a harrowing sequence of events that unfolded rapidly after the first emergency call reached dispatchers just before 1 p.m. local time. According to the National Post, the initial 911 call came from a person in a vehicle outside Silver Rail Elementary reporting that they had been shot at by an individual carrying a long gun.

Dozens of additional emergency calls immediately followed as the assailant targeted the building. Police stated that the 16-year-old local resident forced entry into the campus by shooting through locked exterior doors. Between 400 and 450 students, spanning kindergarten through fifth grade, attended the school alongside more than 40 staff members.

Moments after the gunman breached the building, a local community member who had witnessed the suspect enter the school pursued him inside and engaged him with gunfire. Chief Krantz told journalists during an evening press briefing that the armed bystander shot the suspect, neutralizing the threat just minutes before police units arrived at the scene at 1:02 p.m.

“Our officers entered the building and confirmed the suspect was dead,” Krantz said, adding that officers immediately began administering emergency aid to the victims. According to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation who spoke to EMS1 on the condition of anonymity, the pump-action shotgun used in the rampage had been purchased by the teenager’s mother.

Community Shock and Reunification

Following the lockdown of the facility, the Bend-La Pine School District coordinated emergency bus transport to move surviving students to a nearby church designated as a family reunification center. Anxious parents gathered at the site to locate their children, hugging them and holding hands as they walked toward their vehicles with backpacks and comfort items.

Steve Cook, superintendent of the Bend-La Pine School District, spoke to reporters through tears, describing the incident as an unthinkable tragedy. Classes, sports, and all extracurricular activities across all 32 schools in the district were canceled for Friday as the community reeled from the violence.

State and national leaders expressed profound grief and frustration following the massacre. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek released a statement expressing heartbreak and extending her support to the community member who intervened.

“To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life: Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well,” Kotek said during a press conference.

Federal and state lawmakers renewed intense debates over firearms access, school safety protocols, and the frequency of mass shootings across the United States. Local representatives and gun safety organizations pointed to the tragedy as a stark reminder of ongoing vulnerabilities in public spaces, while local investigators continued to probe whether the teenage gunman had any personal connection to the students or staff at Silver Rail Elementary.
