A New Era for the Royal Canadian Air Force
The first F-35A Lightning II destined for Canada successfully completed its maiden flight on September 23, 2026, departing from Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth, Texas, as reported by The Aviationist. The aircraft, identified by construction number AR-1 and designated as CF-35A, is the first of 88 units intended to modernize the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).
During the flight, the fighter was accompanied by an F-35C acting as a safety chase. The aircraft displayed full Canadian markings, including the bilingual “RCAF – ARC” insignia on the air intakes and a low-visibility Canadian flag on the tail, signaling its integration into the national fleet.
Program Context and Strategic Stakes
The acquisition of the F-35A represents a $19 billion investment, described by the Canadian government as the most significant upgrade to the RCAF in over three decades. The project aims to replace the legacy CF-188 Hornet fleet, which has served as the backbone of Canadian air defense for years.
The program has faced political scrutiny and uncertainty. In March 2025, then-Defense Minister Bill Blair raised questions regarding the long-term commitment to the F-35 amid diplomatic tensions with the United States, suggesting the government was weighing alternative defense needs. However, by October 2025, officials confirmed that Canada remained contractually obligated to at least the initial 16 aircraft currently in production.
Delivery Timeline and Operational Goals
Following the successful maiden flight, the aircraft is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026. According to official procurement plans, these initial jets will be stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona to facilitate pilot training while domestic infrastructure is finalized in Canada. The first delivery to Canadian soil is scheduled for 2028, with Initial Operational Capability (IOC) targeted for 2029-2030 and Full Operational Capability (FOC) expected between 2032 and 2034. The government anticipates the F-35 fleet will remain in service beyond 2060.
