British comedian Diane Morgan is reprising her role as the deadpan and ill-informed mockumentary interviewer Philomena Cunk in a new six-part series titled Cunk on Cinema, Variety reported on October 29, 2026. Created alongside Charlie Brooker, the upcoming comedy program follows Cunk as she investigates global culture’s relationship with motion pictures by interviewing a roster of 23 high-profile Hollywood figures, critics, and academics.
The newly released trailer showcases Cunk putting prominent entertainment figures—including director Michael Bay and actor Benedict Cumberbatch—through a series of bewildered exchanges. The six 15-minute episodes are scheduled to debut on November 15, 2026, streaming on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two in the U.K. and Ireland, and on Netflix internationally outside of those regions.
Putting Hollywood Experts in the Hot Seat
Throughout the series, Cunk approaches the history of film with her signature combination of utter confusion and unearned confidence. In an excerpt from the promotional footage, Cunk questions an apparently flustered Cumberbatch, asking, “When you’re trying to get inside a character, which hole do you enter by, north or south?” The Hollywood Reporter noted that director Michael Bay is similarly left off-balance during his segment, remarking that Cunk’s queries are decidedly odd after being asked if a 12-meter cinema film requires a 12-meter television at home, or if smaller actors are used for smaller screens.
The guest lineup features an array of industry professionals, ranging from Die Hard screenwriter Steven E. de Souza and composer Daniel Pemberton to cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, film critic Mark Kermode, and former Academy president David Rubin. According to an official synopsis from Netflix, the mockumentary aims to trace the evolution of cinema from the invention of the earliest movie cameras and the French New Wave up to modern CGI and the growing influence of artificial intelligence in filmmaking.
Production Background and Creative Team
Cunk on Cinema marks Morgan’s first major return to the character since her 2024 one-off special Cunk on Life, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. That project followed the critically acclaimed five-part 2022 faux docuseries Cunk on Earth, which explored historical inventions and human civilization.
The series is directed by Al Campbell, who previously helmed Cunk on Life, and is produced as a Pacesetter Production for the BBC. The writers’ room for the project includes Brooker, Ben Caudell, Erika Ehler, Eli Goldstone, Jason Hazeley, Dan Maier, Morgan, Joel Morris, Michael Odewale, Kali Varghese, and Sam Ward. Executive producers on the show comprise Brooker, Jessica Rhoades, Morgan, and Ward, alongside recurring academic collaborators Jim Al-Khalili and Ashley Jackson.
