Ford has officially named its upcoming midsize electric pickup truck the Fathom, with a starting price of $28,350, signaling a significant move into a more affordable segment of the electric vehicle market. The company announced Thursday that customer deliveries are slated to begin in the fall of 2027, with preorders opening in early 2027.
The Fathom represents Ford’s second all-electric truck, following the F-150 Lightning. This new model is built on Ford’s novel “Universal EV Platform” (UEV), designed from the ground up for electric powertrains to optimize range, efficiency, and packaging. The automaker is aiming to challenge category leaders like Tesla and emerging international competitors, with production set to take place at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky.
A New Platform for Affordability
A key objective for the Fathom is its accessible pricing, with the base model’s MSRP of $28,350 (before a destination and delivery fee that brings it to $29,945) falling just under the $30,000 target Ford had previously indicated. This pricing strategy is crucial in a market where the average new car price has surpassed $50,000. The Fathom’s affordability is attributed to the new UEV platform and an “assembly tree” manufacturing process aimed at reducing costs, a strategy developed by a dedicated, isolated unit tasked with making EVs price-competitive with gasoline-powered models.
This push for affordability comes despite a broader industry slowdown in EV adoption and the elimination of U.S. consumer incentives for electric vehicles. Ford itself has incurred substantial restructuring charges related to its EV division, underscoring the challenges and strategic shifts in the sector.
Features and Technology
The Fathom will accommodate five passengers and is expected to offer more interior space than vehicles like the Toyota RAV4. It will feature a large, high-resolution touchscreen, a digital car key, and bidirectional power capabilities, similar to the F-150 Lightning. The truck will come standard with Apple Maps integrated into its operating system and will support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, though not the next-generation CarPlay Ultra.
All Fathom models will be “BlueCruise-capable,” meaning the hardware for Ford’s advanced driver-assistance system will be integrated. However, enabling the hands-free driving features will likely require an additional purchase. Ford plans to introduce a newer, more advanced version of BlueCruise that aims for supervised driving from start to finish, with eyes-off driving capabilities anticipated by 2028.
The initial pricing includes a “standard range” lithium iron phosphate battery pack. Ford has not yet disclosed the specific driving range per charge, but the UEV platform’s design is intended to minimize range and efficiency compromises inherent in converting existing platforms to electric power.
Market Positioning and Competition
The name “Fathom” was chosen by Ford to represent a “deep understanding” of a customer mindset that differs from the traditional truck buyer, emphasizing adaptability over raw specifications. This positioning suggests Ford is targeting a broader demographic, potentially appealing to those seeking a versatile, cost-effective electric vehicle.
The electric truck market has seen mixed results. The Ford F-150 Lightning has experienced moderate sales, and Tesla’s Cybertruck, despite initial hype, has faced production and demand challenges. The Fathom enters a less crowded segment at its price point, with limited direct competition. Potential rivals include the Jeff Bezos-backed Slate pickup and non-truck EVs like the Chevrolet Bolt. Ford’s success with the smaller, lower-cost Maverick pickup, available in both internal combustion and hybrid variants, provides a precedent for a more accessible truck model.
