The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) remains cautiously optimistic that workers trapped in the powerhouse tunnels of facilities like the Trishuli-3A project might still be alive. Amhsu Kiran Shahi, an NEA board member, noted that these facilities contain internal structures that could provide refuge, and rescuers are actively pumping oxygen into the tunnels through pipes. Specialized international teams, including a 44-member South Korean disaster relief unit equipped with high-resolution drones and thermal imaging, are assisting local military forces in these high-risk areas.

However, the progress of these operations is severely hampered by the extreme terrain of the narrow mountain gorge and persistent rainfall. The recent reopening of the road to the Gyirong border crossing by Chinese authorities has allowed heavy machinery to finally reach the core disaster zone, providing a much-needed boost to search capabilities.

Economic and Infrastructure Impact

The scale of the destruction is immense. Nepal’s Finance Ministry estimates the damage at $8 billion, a staggering figure for the mountainous nation. The flooding has incapacitated 15 hydropower plants, resulting in a loss of 753 megawatts of generation capacity—roughly 11% of the country’s total power output. Beyond energy, the destruction of 69 schools and the displacement of thousands have created a humanitarian crisis that will require long-term international support.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has emphasized that while the immediate focus remains on life-saving operations, the government is simultaneously working to restore critical infrastructure, including telecommunications and transport links through the deployment of Bailey bridges.

The disaster has reignited debates regarding the sustainability of infrastructure development in the Himalayas. Experts point to the combination of high seismic activity and the rapid melting of glacial lakes as a persistent, lethal threat to downstream settlements and industrial projects.
