A Sudden Loss in Indian Cinema

The Indian film fraternity is in mourning following the death of veteran actor Nana Patekar, who passed away at the age of 75. Known for his commanding screen presence and profound commitment to both Marathi and Hindi cinema, Patekar suffered a severe cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, on the morning of October 8, 2026. The news of his sudden departure has left fans and colleagues across the nation in a state of deep shock and reflection.

Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department at Manipal Hospital, provided a detailed account of the emergency response. According to medical reports, Patekar was found unresponsive by his caretaker at approximately 4:30 a.m. after sending a message to a friend earlier in the night indicating he was unwell. Emergency responders from Manipal Hospital arrived at the residence around 4:20 a.m. and initiated immediate life-saving measures. Despite 45 minutes of continuous CPR, medical professionals were unable to restore his vitals, and he was officially declared dead at 5:20 a.m. Given the nature of the incident, a medico-legal case (MLC) has been registered. The Goa Medical College has appointed a panel of three doctors—Dr. Kedar Narvekar, Dr. Pannag S. Kumar, and Dr. Peter Rodrigues—to conduct a post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of the cardiac event.

State Funeral and Final Rites

In recognition of his monumental contributions to the arts, the Maharashtra government, under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, has announced that Nana Patekar will be accorded a state funeral. Culture Minister Ashish Shelar confirmed the decision, citing the actor’s unparalleled legacy in Marathi theatre and his extensive work in mainstream Indian cinema. The mortal remains of the actor are scheduled to be transported to his private farmhouse in Donje, on the outskirts of Pune, where the final rites will be performed on Thursday. Ganesh Thorat, CEO of the actor’s Naam Foundation, stated that the farmhouse will be open to the public for a final ‘darshan’ to allow admirers to pay their last respects before the private ceremonies commence.

A Legacy of Intensity and Restraint

Born Vishwanath Patekar in 1951, he began his artistic journey in Marathi theatre during the late 1970s. His transition to mainstream cinema was marked by a series of powerful performances that redefined the portrayal of complex, layered characters. Over his illustrious career, Patekar garnered three National Film Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for ‘Parinda’ (1989) and ‘Agni Sakshi’ (1996), and Best Actor for the iconic ‘Krantiveer’ (1994). He was also honored with the Padma Shri in 2013. His filmography, which includes notable works such as ‘Prahaar’, ‘Angaar’, ‘Yashwant’, ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’, and ‘Natsamrat’, showcased his unique ability to balance aggression with remarkable emotional restraint.

Tributes have flooded social media from across the industry. Actor Akshay Kumar, who shared the screen with Patekar in the comedy ‘Welcome’, reflected on the late actor’s distinct style, stating, “That voice, that intensity, that honesty in every performance… he was completely his own.” Actor-politician Ravi Kishan noted that despite his stardom, Patekar remained deeply connected to his roots, often choosing to live a simple, private life far from the typical glitz of the film industry. Marathi actor Siddharth Jadhav and R. Madhavan also expressed their profound grief, emphasizing that the void left by his passing will be difficult to fill. Patekar is survived by his son and his wife, from whom he had been separated.
