Astronomers and skywatchers are preparing for a significant celestial event in the early hours of August 28, 2026, as a deep partial lunar eclipse occurs. Unlike a total lunar eclipse, where the Moon is completely shrouded in Earth’s umbra, this event will see approximately 96.2% of the lunar disk enter the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow. The result will be a dramatic visual display, often referred to as an ‘almost Blood Moon,’ as the eclipsed portion of the surface takes on a characteristic deep red, brown, or copper hue.

According to data from astronomical tracking resources, the entire event spans five hours and 38 minutes, beginning with a subtle penumbral phase at 01:23 UTC. The more distinct partial phase, where the umbral shadow begins to bite into the lunar surface, commences at 02:33 UTC. The peak of the eclipse, when the Moon will appear most obscured, is set for 04:12 UTC.

Global Visibility and Viewing Challenges

The visibility of this event depends heavily on geographic location and the time of the Moon’s setting. Observers across North, Central, and South America are expected to have the most favorable conditions, with much of the continent able to witness the peak of the eclipse while the Moon is still high in the sky. For residents in the United Kingdom and parts of Western Europe, the event will take place before dawn on Friday, August 28. However, observers in these regions face a significant challenge: the Moon will be very low on the western horizon during the maximum phase.

In cities such as London, the Moon will be positioned only about 7–9 degrees above the horizon at the 05:12 a.m. BST peak. Astronomers advise that those in Europe and the UK will need an unobstructed view to the west to avoid interference from buildings, trees, or low-lying atmospheric haze. In contrast, locations further east, such as parts of Central and Eastern Europe, may see the Moon set before the eclipse reaches its deepest stages, significantly limiting the viewing window.

Technical Reality vs. ‘Blood Moon’ Branding

While the term ‘Blood Moon’ is frequently used to describe the event, it is technically a misnomer in this instance. A true Blood Moon is reserved for total lunar eclipses where the entire lunar disk is illuminated by sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere. Because 3.8% of the Moon will remain outside the umbral shadow, this remains a deep partial eclipse. Despite this, the visual effect for casual observers will be striking. The red and copper colors are caused by Rayleigh scattering, the same phenomenon responsible for the colors of sunsets, where blue light is filtered out by the atmosphere and red wavelengths are bent toward the Moon.

No specialized equipment, such as eclipse glasses or solar filters, is required to view the event. The eclipse is safe to observe with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope. The next total lunar eclipse is not scheduled to occur until December 31, 2028, making this the most significant lunar event until that date.
