Quick Read

  • God of War: Laufey is set for release on February 16, 2027, on PS5.
  • A new, separate God of War title starring Kratos is officially in development.
  • The new Kratos title will connect directly to the narrative established in Laufey.
  • Santa Monica Studio is also working on a remake of the original Greek trilogy.

A New Chapter in the God of War Franchise

During the God of War: Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Santa Monica Studio provided a major update on the future of its flagship action-adventure franchise. Cory Barlog, Head of Creative at the studio, officially confirmed that a new God of War title starring Kratos is currently in development. This project is slated to follow the release of the upcoming spin-off, God of War: Laufey, and is designed to bridge narrative elements directly from Faye’s journey into the future of the series.

The announcement clarifies the studio’s long-term roadmap. While God of War: Laufey, which stars Kratos’ late wife Faye, explores the “Everywhen”—an afterlife populated by figures from various mythologies—it is not intended to be a disconnected experience. Barlog emphasized that the events within the Faye-led title are foundational, serving to expand the world-building and establish critical stakes for the next mainline installment featuring Kratos.

Laufey Release and Narrative Integration

The panel also confirmed that God of War: Laufey is scheduled for release on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The game promises a departure from the traditional Kratos-focused gameplay, placing players in the role of Faye, described by actor Deborah Ann Woll as a “reluctant hero.” The narrative aims to provide context to the genesis of Kratos’ own character development, with actor Chris Judge noting that his character’s journey toward hope and forgiveness was inextricably linked to his relationship with Faye.

The integration of these stories is a strategic move for the studio. By positioning Laufey as a precursor to the next Kratos-led game, the developers are signaling a more interconnected franchise structure. Jack Quaid, who voices the character Phranque, highlighted that his character’s interactions with Faye are key to bringing out her nuanced motivations, further grounding the story in the “here and now” of the game’s unique setting.

Broader Franchise Outlook

Beyond the upcoming releases, Santa Monica Studio continues to manage a busy development pipeline. Alongside the new projects, the studio has previously announced a remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy. While that project remains in its early stages of development with no official release date, it underscores the studio’s commitment to both expanding the current narrative arc and revisiting the foundational history of the franchise.

As the studio balances these diverse projects, the focus remains on maintaining the high standard of storytelling that defined the 2018 God of War soft-reboot and 2022’s God of War Ragnarök. With the release date for Laufey now locked, fans have a clear timeline for when the next phase of the series begins.
