Strategic Infrastructure Milestone
Singapore’s national water agency, PUB, officially announced the completion of the Tengah Service Reservoir on June 15, 2026. The S$120 million infrastructure project, which began planning in 2016, is a cornerstone of the city-state’s long-term strategy to ensure water reliability for its expanding residential and industrial sectors.
Located at the highest point in the Tengah region, the reservoir is engineered to serve approximately 42,000 future households and businesses within the upcoming Tengah industrial precinct. With a capacity equivalent to 22 Olympic-sized swimming pools, the facility acts as a critical buffer against fluctuations in demand, ensuring stable water pressure throughout the network.
Engineering and Environmental Integration
The project utilized the slipform construction method for the first time in a service reservoir development. This technique involved continuous 24/7 concrete pouring over a seven-day cycle, resulting in seamless circular walls that significantly reduce the risk of structural leakage. Beyond the engineering feat, PUB focused on environmental mitigation, given the reservoir’s location within a forested area. Measures included wildlife shepherding and the installation of dark brown aluminium fins on the tanks to visually integrate the infrastructure into the forest canopy.
Long-Term Planning
During the opening of the 11th Singapore International Water Week (SIWW2026), Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong highlighted the reservoir as a prime example of foresight in urban planning. “This is what long-term planning and investment means in practice,” he stated. The reservoir will operate remotely via PUB’s centralised system, allowing for real-time monitoring of water quality parameters, including pH levels, residual chlorine, and bacterial indicators, further reducing the need for manual intervention in daily operations.
