A Shift in Career Path
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Rice has announced a significant life transition, confirming her resignation from her first corporate employment role. After a year-long hiatus from social media, the 38-year-old former swimmer revealed she has stepped down as CEO of a Dubai-based company, a position she accepted after an initial eight-month tenure at the director level.
Rice, who retired from professional swimming in 2014, had been navigating a complex period following her marriage to Perth-based Christian pastor Mark Lassey and their relocation to the Middle East. According to statements released by the athlete, the decision to leave the corporate world was prompted by a “spiritual intervention.”
Faith Over Corporate Ambition
Despite having earned an MBA from the University of Queensland and aspiring to reach the C-suite, Rice explained that her priorities shifted as she found herself “stretched” between her professional obligations, her husband’s leadership role within the Kingdomcity church, and her personal faith journey.
“After eight months in the role, I was asked to take over as CEO. Of course, I tried to act very nonchalant in the meeting, but I was so excited,” Rice shared with her followers. However, she noted that the subsequent period of reflection led her to a different conclusion. “God had other plans,” she added, describing the resignation process as a moment of clarity that left her currently “formally unemployed” yet feeling more fulfilled than when she held multiple consulting roles and brand partnerships.
While acknowledging that the sudden uncertainty makes her “logical brain hurt,” Rice maintains that the transition is necessary for her commitment to her faith and family. The former Olympian, who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2009 for her achievements in Beijing, is currently focusing on her life in Dubai as she navigates this new chapter beyond the corporate and sporting arenas.
