The move marks a significant departure for the Rangers, who appear to be pivoting toward a seller’s strategy as the season enters its final two months.
For the Rangers, the acquisition of Macko addresses a need for pitching depth while providing immediate financial relief. According to reports from Lone Star Ball, the trade saves the organization approximately $1 million in 2026 salary obligations. Furthermore, it allows the team to avoid difficult future decisions regarding Smith, who had struggled to regain his form following a series of health setbacks.
The Decline of a Utility Star
Josh Smith’s tenure in Texas concludes after a difficult 2026 campaign. Once a key contributor to the 2023 World Series championship team and a 2024 American League Silver Slugger winner, Smith’s role diminished significantly this season. After starting as the primary replacement for Marcus Semien at second base, Smith suffered a glute strain followed by a bout of viral meningitis. These absences allowed teammates Ezequiel Duran and Nicky Lopez to solidify their positions in the infield, effectively pushing Smith to Triple-A Round Rock.
Smith, 28, finishes his time in Texas with a career slash line of .234/.325/.346. His 2026 performance, however, saw his offensive output drop to .213/.299/.272. Despite his recent struggles, he remains under team control through 2028, a factor that likely made him an attractive target for Toronto as they look to build depth.
Toronto’s Roster Management
The Blue Jays are betting on Smith’s versatility. By acquiring a player who has logged time at every defensive position except catcher, Toronto gains a flexible bench piece. Adam Macko, the 25-year-old Slovakian-born pitcher sent to Texas, has struggled with command during his time in the majors this season, posting a 4.91 ERA in 22 relief appearances. Macko has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock following the completion of the deal.
The inclusion of Josh Stephan, 24, adds a “pitchability” prospect to Toronto’s system. While Stephan has shown promise at lower levels, he has struggled with a 5.44 ERA at the Triple-A level this year. For the Rangers, moving Stephan—who was approaching minor-league free agency—is a calculated move to secure a major-league-ready arm in Macko.
